Our mailboxes are plagued by spam messages, no matter how hard we try to avoid providing our email addresses on suspicious websites. If you need to reinforce a mail server's protection features, CleanMail Server can help you. It gives you the possibility of setting up powerful anti-spam filters and effective anti-virus measures. Its integrated POP3 connector will download your messages from a POP3 server, filter them and forward them to your SMTP server. You can set up multiple connectors and proxies, with their own filtering features.

CleanMail Server is designed specifically for server-based anti-spam protection. If you wish to filter your messages on a single computer, you should look at CleanMail Home. The applications are similar and you can install them in a matter of seconds. CleanMail Server works on Windows 2000 and all later versions, as well as numerous Server editions. It is also compatible with any mail server program, including MS Exchange, Lotus Notes, Domino or IMail.

The software comes with a tabbed interface, on which you can review traffic statistics, event logs, reports, search for email messages and configure your anti-spam and anti-virus protection measures. You have to make a few initial configurations, when you launch CleanMail Server for the first time. You will have to choose a configuration type, such as a POP3 to SMTP connector, a POP3 transparency proxy or a SMTP transparency proxy. Depending on your choice, a wizard will guide you through different procedures.

You can add and configure additional POP3 connectors and proxies, as well as SMTP proxies. Connectors and proxies are listed on the Configuration tab. The software allows you to add one or more filters to individual proxies and connectors. It allows you to choose from a wide variety of filters, for attachments, fingerprints, viruses and you can also add blacklist and whitelist filters, spam traps or CleanMail's trademark SpamAssassin filters.

All filters are configured with the aid of a wizard. You can type specific items, which you want to block, like email addresses or patterns, like domain names, certain characters, file extensions and so on. Additionally, you may select an action for intercepted items, like accepting and delivering them, marking them as junk or deleting them. All filters are quite easy to configure and, in certain cases, you can choose to go through advanced or simple settings, when you start the configuration process.

Pros

You may create and configure numerous filters for individual connectors and proxies. The software can block or delete incoming messages, based on the sender's address or domain, the attachment's extension and so on. CleanMail Server is compatible with numerous Windows versions and it provides support for any mail server software.

Cons

There are no obvious issues to mention. Thanks to CleanMail Server's smart capabilities, your mail servers will be safe against any spam messages or viruses.
